CELEBRATING THE MHS CLASS OF 2020
Like countless high school seniors across the county, our seniors were forced to forego so many of the traditional celebrations associated with graduation. The prom, senior awards, honor society indications and music concerts were all sidelined by the COVID-19 pandemic and thereby denied to our graduates.
The District worked hard to adapt by creating a page to celebrate all seniors in addition to honoring graduates with a virtual commencement video. But we still wanted more.
When Governor Murphy gave us the green light to organize in-person graduation ceremonies, we were excited and happy to be able to provide our seniors with some semblance of a typical senior year. Given the limitations of 500 total attendees at any ceremony, we needed to make some decisions about how to plan our graduations. We knew it was important for parents to be a part of this rite of passage and therefore decided that each graduate would be able to invite two guests to help celebrate.
The outcome was three outdoor graduation ceremonies held July 8th and 9th on the football field. Graduates and their guests were escorted onto the field and seated together in socially distanced pods of three chairs. A brief ceremony ensued where each graduate's name was called so that each could be honored. The ceremony ended with the graduates standing as a group and moving their tassels from the right to the left to signify the official act of graduating. It was truly a pleasure to see the happiness on the faces of our graduates and their guests!
