On Thursday, April 20, over 150 proud alumni, Morris School District staff, parents of students/alumni and community members attended our first annual Motown-themed trivia night! Twenty-five teams gathered with MHS graduates spanning 56 class years from the class of 1965 up to 2021!

A CULINARY HOMECOMING
When a chef with years of training and experience under his coat offers to teach a culinary class on scratch-made pasta – you jump at the opportunity! Especially when it’s famed Morristown-native, Chef AJ Sankofa! At the end of the 2021-2022 school year, Morristown High School Culinary Arts students had the pleasure of meeting fellow Colonial, Chef AJ Sankofa, class of ’15, where they learned first-hand, how to make fresh, authentic pasta like the dishes on his menu at ESO Artisanal Pasta in Morristown.

AN OPUS - CELEBRATING ANN B. RHINES
“When I learned that my all-time favorite elementary school teacher, Ann Rhines, had just retired from the Board of Ed, and an event honoring her would include former students, I immediately hopped on. A Hunter grad transported to the ‘burbs, Mrs. Rhines was and is a genuine powerhouse who nurtured generations of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, sussing out our fledgling ambitions, instilling confidence, and reliably having our backs — e.g. marching a student rejected during school-band tryouts back to the music room and persuading the maestro to give him a chance (that boy is now a highly regarded rock-n-roll drummer… ).

WJSV: 50 YEARS AND STILL ROCKIN'
The Morristown High School broadcasting program is an award-winning staple in the District since 1971. However, due to COVID-19 health and safety concerns, MHS students were not allowed to broadcast from the physical studios of the WJSV radio station this year. Broadcasting teacher and WJSV Radio Station Advisor, Lance Armstrong, approached the Morris Educational Foundation for a grant to purchase remote broadcasting equipment in November, and in January student DJs received the opportunity to broadcast and run all aspects of the radio station from their homes and anywhere they had an internet connection.

LEGACY OF BELOVED 2013 MHS ALUM CONTINUES WITH MYLES SMILED ON YOU AWARD
In 2019, the Morris Educational Foundation selected five Morristown High School alumni as the first recipients of the Myles Smiled on You Award for secondary education loan reduction. The award was created in memory of Myles Mislavsky, Morristown High School graduate class of 2013, and is funded by his family, friends and the Golden Bagel Runners who knew and loved Myles.

On September 8, the 2020-2021 Morris School District school year officially began with hybrid instruction for all Pre-K through 12th grade students in all ten schools. As with any new school year, many felt a mix of excitement and nervousness wondering what this new school year would look like.

JEREMY GULISH – FOUNDER OF MASKS FOR MORRISTOWN
Fate brought Jeremy Gulish to become involved in COVID-19 community outreach efforts. As a Morristown resident, business owner and Morris School District parent, he has several friends and clients who work at Morristown Medical Center and both of his daughters were delivered there. He had been hearing that obtaining Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) was an issue at the hospital as it was throughout the country. In passing, his neighbor Michael Morris, mentioned that he was working on procuring PPE as his lighting company, Durabrite, manufactures in China and was one of the few with access to masks and gloves.

CELEBRATING THE MHS CLASS OF 2020
Like countless high school seniors across the county, our seniors were forced to forego so many of the traditional celebrations associated with graduation. The prom, senior awards, honor society indications and music concerts were all sidelined by the COVID-19 pandemic and thereby denied to our graduates.
