MEF SCHOLARSHIP & AWARD NEWS

The Morris Educational Foundation (MEF), partner and sponsor of Morristown Colonial Nation, awarded scholarships to 23 Morristown High School students in June totaling $371,250!  As an MEF Board of Trustee member since 2010 and an alumni parent, I’m so proud to be a part of the MEF and the Scholarship committee, which provides the largest award of scholarship dollars to MHS students.

Of the 18 Morris Educational Foundation scholarships, 10 were funded by or in honor of MHS alumni.  Two honor Morris School District staff members, James B. Galbraith and Mary Bentzlin.  Alumni who have funded or were honored include:

  • Carl and Shirley Eklund – MHS Class of '39
  • Judy and Eliot Steinberg – Long-term Morris Township residents, funded by their sons, MHS graduates, Julian ’75, Andy ‘73 and Robert Steinberg ‘69
  • Stephen B. Wiley – In honor and memory of Stephen Wiley, MHS Class of ‘47
  • Robert Wong – MHS Class of ‘67, in memory of his parents
  • Brian J. McNally – In memory of Capt. McNally, MHS Class of ‘06
  • Dorothy Johnson – MHS Class of ‘47
  • Javier Avelar – In memory of Javier Avelar, MHS Class of ‘13
  • John T. Cunningham – MHS Class of ‘32
  • Mary Bentzlin – MSD Staff Member for over 30 years
  • James B. Galbraith – Former Morristown High School Teacher and Principal
  • Ricky Godoy – In memory of Ricky Godoy, MHS Class of ‘11
  • Shirley Shalit – MHS Class of ‘39

What an extremely generous way to “pay it forward!”

Offering a different approach to higher education loan reduction, the Myles Smiled On You Award was established and awarded to five deserving MHS alumni in 2019, its inaugural year.  This award was created in memory of Myles Mislavsky, MHS Class of ‘13 and is funded by his family, friends and the Golden Bagel Runners who knew and loved Myles.  The Mislavsky/Martinez family recognized the burden college debt weighs on many young people today making it hard for them to save and get ahead, and they hope to inspire others to tackle the issue of college debt through philanthropy.  To that, we say, Well Done and Thank You!

To all our alumni and their families and friends, thank you for thinking about the future of your fellow Morristown High School graduates.  Once again, the strength of the Morristown community shines through.  #morristownstrong #colonialnationproud
