Why We Love the Morris School District
Why do we LOVE the Morris School District? It’s hard to put into words. The facts, that we are a diverse, cosmopolitan district that is rich in history, can be read in article after article. But the pride you feel when you are part of it is bigger than those words.
We are proud to be a thriving example of successful integration. In 1971, in a landmark case, Jenkins et al. versus the Boards of Education, the New Jersey Supreme Court ordered the first involuntary merger of school districts anywhere in the country to create the Morris School District of today…a district exploding with programs, diversity and opportunity for all and the unifying entity of our community. The New York Times reported in 2016, “As other districts grapple with segregation, this one makes integration work.”
We are proud of the excellence shown in and out of our classrooms. Our faculty and administration boast the highest credentials; our students go to Ivy League schools, win top titles on the courts and fields and excel in all areas of the arts. Tens of thousands of alumni enjoy careers as doctors, teachers, attorneys and artists. The Morris School District today leads in the technology and innovation that allowed our students to learn and study through our current pandemic with thinking out-of-the-box and future-ready preparedness.
We are proud of our rich history. We have proven that strong schools’ equal strong community. As lead attorney for the 1971 court ordered merger and Morristown High School alum, Stephen Wiley, shared, “Our schools teach the ABC’s with distinction, but young people in the Morris School District also learn the D’s, E’s and F’s. By association and experience, they learn about Democracy and Diversity, about Equal opportunity and Ethnic strengths, about Freedom and Fraternity, about the whole alphabet of America.”
We are proud the Morris School District has moved through the decades staying true to our rich heritage of academic excellence, diversity, inclusion. We know our schools will continue to meet any challenges that arise to successfully forge ahead just as our past has taught us.
This is why we LOVE the Morris School District.
